Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Mernda Homes

Mernda grew from farmland into one of Melbourne’s northern growth suburbs from the early 2000s, so most kitchens are already open to a family room and meals area. The complaints are usually about what the builder supplied: laminate benchtops, a narrow walk-in pantry, a short island, and appliances and cabinet doors that are showing their age.

Common kitchen projects here are replacing cabinetry and benchtops on the same footprint, converting the walk-in pantry into a butler’s pantry with a sink and bench, lengthening the island, and improving lighting and power. Inside work usually needs no planning permit, although estate guidelines can affect changes to the outside of the home, so we check any external work with the City of Whittlesea.

Before You Start

What to Plan For in a Mernda Kitchen

  1. Storage

Turning the Pantry Into a Butler’s Pantry

The walk-in pantry behind many Mernda kitchens has open shelves and little else. Adding a bench, power for small appliances and sometimes a second sink lets the toaster and coffee machine live out of sight. A sink means extending plumbing through the slab or a wall cavity, so we check where the existing pipes run before drawing the design.

  2. Layout

    Extending the Island Bench

Estate kitchens in Mernda often have an island too short for stools on one side and drawers on the other. Lengthening it, or replacing it with a wider one, needs enough walkway clearance to the back bench and the family room. We measure the circulation space and check whether a sink or cooktop set into the island has to move.

  3. Electrical

    Power and Lighting

Builder-range kitchens in Mernda homes usually came with a few downlights and a handful of power points. A renovation is the time to add power in the pantry and island, under-cabinet lighting and a circuit for an induction cooktop. Our licensed electricians check the switchboard has capacity and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety when finished.

  4. Outdoor

    Opening to the Alfresco

Most Mernda homes have an alfresco area under the main roof just beyond the meals area, but the cooking zone often faces away from it. Moving the cooktop or sink run, or adding a servery window or wider sliding door, makes it easier to cook for people outside. A new opening in a brick veneer wall needs a lintel and may need a building permit.

  5. Materials

    Benchtops for Busy Kitchens

Laminate benchtops in older estate kitchens tend to swell around the sink and chip along the front edge. Stone, porcelain and compact laminate panels all suit a family kitchen, each with different weight, edge profiles and care needs. Heavier tops can need stronger cabinet support, so we confirm the cabinetry and bring samples to compare against your floor.

FAQ

Kitchen Renovations Mernda: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Can I replace my Mernda kitchen without changing the layout?

Yes. Keeping the sink, dishwasher and cooktop where they are avoids cutting into the slab for new plumbing, which saves time and disruption. New doors, benchtops, a splashback, lighting and appliances on the same footprint can transform an estate kitchen. If you want a different layout, we show you what moving the services would involve before you decide.

Do Mernda estate guidelines affect a kitchen renovation?

Estate design guidelines and covenants usually deal with what can be seen from the street, such as facades, fencing and roofing, not the kitchen inside. They can matter if the renovation includes a new window, a servery opening or an extension. Your title and contract of sale show any covenant, and we check before any external work.

How long does a Mernda kitchen renovation take?

For a same-footprint kitchen, the main disruption runs from removing the old cabinets to installing the benchtops, which are templated once the new cabinets are in. Plumbing changes or a butler’s pantry add time. Many Mernda families set up a microwave and kettle in the laundry or on the alfresco, and we give you a written schedule at the start.

We plan to lease our Mernda home. What should the kitchen have?

Victoria’s rental minimum standards ask for a kitchen with a dedicated space for cooking and preparing food, a sink supplied with hot and cold water, and a stovetop with at least two burners. Most Mernda kitchens already meet these, so the work is usually about durability: a hard-wearing benchtop, sound hinges and drawer runners, a working rangehood and reliable appliances.

Can we switch from gas to induction in our Mernda kitchen?

Usually, yes. An induction cooktop needs a dedicated circuit, and our electrician first checks that the switchboard and incoming supply can take the load. A licensed gasfitter then caps the cooktop gas line safely. Many Mernda homes also have gas hot water and heating, which can stay connected until you decide to replace them.
