Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Mill Park Homes

Mill Park grew through the 1980s and 90s, with estates of brick veneer family homes around lakes, parklands and Plenty Road. Kitchens from that period usually have laminate or timber-look cabinetry, an L-shaped bench with a breakfast bar and a separate formal dining room, with the family room tacked on beside it.

That shapes most of our Mill Park kitchen renovations: replacing dated cabinets and benchtops, removing a wall or bulkhead to open the kitchen to the family area, adding an island and walk-in pantry, and creating better access to the alfresco. Most kitchen work doesn’t need a planning permit, though structural changes need a building permit, and we confirm extension requirements with the City of Whittlesea.

Before You Start

Planning a Kitchen Renovation in Mill Park

  1. Layout

The 1980s and 90s Kitchen Layout

A typical Mill Park kitchen from the 1980s or 90s has an L-shaped bench with a breakfast bar, a formal dining room on one side and the family room on the other. Removing a bulkhead or part of a wall can join the kitchen to the family room and give space for a proper island.

  2. Storage

    Bulkheads and Ceilings

Many Mill Park kitchens have a bulkhead above the overhead cupboards, sometimes hiding ducting or plumbing. Removing it lets cupboards run to the ceiling for more storage. We check what is inside before we commit, and reroute ducting if needed. In many double-storey Mill Park homes the bulkhead also carries pipes from the bathroom upstairs, which affects what can move.

  3. Electrical

    Old Wiring and Appliances

Original Mill Park kitchens often have too few power points and a cooktop and oven on old circuits. Our licensed electricians update what is needed, and the job is finished with a Certificate of Electrical Safety. Gas and water changes are done by licensed plumbers with a compliance certificate.

  4. Design

A Whole-Home Refresh at the Same Time

Kitchens in Mill Park are often renovated along with floors, lighting and paint. Our Mill Park Home Renovation, a 1990s home, combined gloss white cabinetry, marble stone benchtops and a herringbone splashback with engineered floorboards, LED downlights and a full repaint, so the new kitchen did not look out of place.

  5. Outdoor

    Better Access to the Backyard

Many Mill Park homes sit on reasonably sized blocks with a backyard that is under-used. Repositioning the kitchen, or widening the door from the meals area to the alfresco, makes outdoor dining easier. Changes to external openings generally need a building permit, which we organise.

FAQ

Kitchen Renovations Mill Park: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Can you show me a Mill Park kitchen you have renovated?

Yes. The kitchen in our Mill Park Home Renovation, a 1990s home, has gloss white cabinetry, marble stone benchtops, a herringbone tiled splashback and new energy-efficient appliances. The project page shows it alongside the new engineered floorboards, LED downlights and renovated bathrooms, which were all part of the same job.

Do I need a permit to open up my Mill Park kitchen?

Internal kitchen changes generally need no planning permit from the City of Whittlesea. Removing or altering a load-bearing wall needs a building permit and an engineered beam. We check the wall and roof structure at the first visit and arrange any permit.

Should we keep the formal dining room?

Many Mill Park families now eat at the island or in the family room, so the formal dining room is often unused. It can become a study, a playroom or part of a larger open kitchen. We talk through how you live before suggesting a layout.

How long will our Mill Park kitchen be out of action?

Once cabinetry is made, the work in your Mill Park home usually takes two to four weeks. If you are also replacing floors or painting, we sequence the trades so the house is disrupted for as short a time as possible.

Is it worth updating a Mill Park kitchen before selling or leasing the house?

Kitchens in Mill Park’s 1980s and 1990s brick veneer homes often have timber-look laminate, an overhead bulkhead and a separate meals area. Families buying here want bench space and storage, so new benchtops, door fronts and removing an unused bulkhead can modernise the room. Keep the sink and cooktop where they are if time is short. If leasing, make sure the stovetop, sink and food preparation area meet Victoria’s rental minimum standards.
