Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Attwood Homes

Attwood is a quiet suburb of family homes north of the Moonee Ponds Creek, with brick houses built from around 1980 and newer estates from the late 1990s, many on generous blocks close to Woodlands Historic Park. Kitchens in the older homes tend to be a good size but dated, with timber-look or laminate cabinetry, a separate formal dining room and a meals area that only half connects to the family room.

Common kitchen projects here include removing walls between the kitchen, meals and family rooms, adding an island bench and walk-in pantry, replacing original cabinetry and appliances, and linking the kitchen to an alfresco area. Most interior work doesn’t need a planning permit from Hume City Council, though plumbing, gas and electrical changes are done by licensed trades.

Before You Start

Before You Renovate a Kitchen in Attwood

  1. Structure

    Joining Kitchen, Meals and Family

Many Attwood homes from around 1980 have the kitchen, meals area and family room separated by part walls, a bulkhead or a step in the floor. Opening them up may involve load-bearing walls, which need a beam and a building permit. We check the roof framing and floor levels before drawing the new layout, so the quote covers the structural work.

  2. Materials

    Original Timber-Look Cabinetry

Some Attwood kitchens still have their original timber-look doors and laminate benches. If the layout works, new doors, stone benchtops and handles can update them, but swollen carcasses near the sink and dishwasher usually mean a full replacement is better value. We inspect the cabinets and explain both options before you decide.

  3. Storage

    Pantry and Island Space

Larger Attwood kitchens usually have room for both an island and a walk-in pantry. A pantry can often be carved from a laundry passage or an under-used corner, while the island can house deep drawers and a concealed bin. We plan clearances so the kitchen stays easy to move around when several people are in it.

  4. Outdoor

    Kitchen to Alfresco

Attwood backyards are often large, and a kitchen at the rear of the house can open to a covered alfresco through sliding or stacker doors. A servery window over the bench is another option that keeps the cook part of the gathering. We plan the floor level, threshold and roof connection so the indoor and outdoor areas work together.

  5. Electrical

    Gas, Power and Rangehood

Older Attwood kitchens often run on gas cooking with limited power at the bench. Switching to induction or adding a wall oven and dishwasher needs suitable circuits, and a ducted rangehood should vent outside rather than into the roof space. Our licensed electricians and gasfitters handle the changes and provide compliance certificates.

FAQ

Kitchen Renovations Attwood: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Will I need a permit to open up my Attwood kitchen?

If the wall you want to remove is load-bearing, a building permit and an engineer’s design are usually needed. A planning permit from Hume City Council is generally not required for internal changes. We confirm whether the wall is structural and what permits apply before quoting, so there are no surprises once work starts.

Can we keep the formal dining room?

Yes. Some Attwood families prefer to keep a separate dining room for larger gatherings while opening the kitchen to the family room. Others turn it into a study or playroom. We can draw both options so you can see how each layout affects storage, natural light and how people move through the house.

How long will we be without a kitchen?

For a kitchen on the same footprint, the main disruption is between removing the old cabinets and fitting benchtops, which are measured after the cabinets are installed. Removing walls or moving plumbing adds time. In Attwood homes with a large laundry or a second living area, a temporary kitchen setup is usually easy to arrange.

Is it worth updating our Attwood kitchen before we sell?

Attwood homes are often bought by families who want room to grow, and the kitchen is one of the first rooms they look at. A clean, working kitchen with fresh benchtops, new handles, a new cooktop and updated lighting may be enough. A complete renovation is better suited to owners who will use it for years than to the weeks before listing.
