Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Huntingdale Homes
Huntingdale, known as East Oakleigh until the 1950s, is mostly postwar homes that usually have one bathroom and a separate toilet, often with original tiles, a shower over the bath and limited storage. Older units have similar small bathrooms, while newer townhouses have ensuites that can be cramped. Many owners want a second bathroom or a layout that suits a growing family or tenants.
Typical Huntingdale bathroom projects include rebuilding original bathrooms with modern waterproofing and fittings, adding an ensuite or second bathroom, converting baths to walk-in showers, and making small unit bathrooms easier to clean and maintain. Most interior bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Monash, and our licensed trades provide compliance certificates for plumbing and electrical work.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Huntingdale Bathroom
Rentals
Hard-Wearing Rental Finishes
Some Huntingdale homes are leased to students and staff who use the station’s bus link to Monash University. A rental bathroom works harder than most, so large-format tiles with fewer grout lines, a solid vanity, a quality mixer and a strong exhaust fan reduce maintenance calls. We suggest finishes that clean easily and are simple to repair.
Layout
Finding Room for a Second Bathroom
With one bathroom and three bedrooms, many Huntingdale houses can fit a second bathroom by combining the separate toilet with a linen cupboard, or by using part of a back room. Where the drains run matters most, because the distance to the sewer line shapes the layout and the work involved. We check under the house before you commit to a plan.
Asbestos
Asbestos Behind Old Tiles
Stripping out an original Huntingdale bathroom can expose asbestos cement sheeting behind wall tiles, in the ceiling or under the floor of homes built before 1990. We arrange testing before demolition, and larger amounts are removed by a licensed removalist under the required controls, so the rest of the job can go ahead safely and on time.
Waterproofing
Walk-In Showers Without a Hob
Converting a shower over bath into a walk-in shower in a postwar Huntingdale home usually means recessing or building up the floor to get the right fall to the waste. On timber floors, the joists can be lowered in the shower area to keep the entry flush. Waterproofing is done to the Australian Standard before any tiling starts.
Ventilation
Windowless Townhouse Ensuites
Newer Huntingdale townhouses often have an internal ensuite with no window, where steam has nowhere to go. A powerful ducted exhaust fan on a run-on timer, a glass screen that stops short of the ceiling and light-coloured tiles help with moisture and light. We check where the duct can exit through the roof or an outside wall.

How long does a bathroom renovation take in Huntingdale?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. A small unit bathroom on the same layout is at the shorter end, while moving plumbing, lowering floor joists for a walk-in shower or removing asbestos linings in an older Huntingdale home takes longer. We give you a written schedule before work starts so you know when the room will be usable again.
Do I need a permit to renovate a Huntingdale bathroom?
Generally not a planning permit from the City of Monash for internal work. Removing a wall or altering the structure can bring in a building permit. Our licensed plumbers provide a compliance certificate and our electricians a Certificate of Electrical Safety. Units and townhouses with an owners corporation may also need its consent first.
Can a small Huntingdale bathroom fit both a bath and a walk-in shower?
Sometimes. A freestanding bath needs more floor area than many original Huntingdale bathrooms have, but a built-in bath alongside a separate shower can work if the toilet moves out or the room borrows space from a linen press or hallway. We sketch both options at your property so you can see what fits before deciding.
What should a Huntingdale rental bathroom have before new tenants move in?
A Huntingdale rental bathroom should be easy to clean, free of leaks and well ventilated. Before a new lease, fix dripping taps and leaking shower screens, reseal around the bath and basin, check that the exhaust fan works and treat any mould on the ceiling. Worn vanities and cracked tiles are worth replacing. A full renovation suits owners with longer-term plans for the property.
